Our Approach
Five principles that govern the Foundation's daily work.
“The path is straight where the elder has walked it twice.”
Keiyo counsel on prudence
We keep five principles. They describe how the Foundation behaves when nobody is watching, which is the only time principles matter, and they are the same in Kabartonjo as in Boston, in Eldoret as in London.
Five principles
- 01
Elder led
The council of elders sets direction and holds the executive to account. No initiative launches over a serious elder objection.
- 02
Evidence based
We publish what we measure, and we measure what we do. When the evidence does not support a project, we stop, and we say why.
- 03
County anchored
Every programme has a county home. County coordinators live in the community they serve. Decisions are made where the work happens, not in a distant office.
- 04
Cooperative first
Where a cooperative form is possible, we prefer it. Ownership is a school. Households that own together learn how to govern together.
- 05
Radically transparent
Every shilling is accounted for and published quarterly. Every trustee's other affiliations are on the record. Every conflict of interest is declared before the meeting begins.
“Rules are what the strong write for themselves before power arrives.”
