Trans Nzoia is the great maize plain at the foot of Mount Elgon. Kitale is its capital, and one of the older Kalenjin market towns of western Kenya.

The county carries the Sabaot along the Elgon foothills, the Cherangany along the escarpment above Kwanza, and settler households from Nandi, Keiyo, Marakwet, Arror, Samor, and Pokot in the wards below. It is one of the most inter Kalenjin counties in the country.

Foundation work here concentrates on the Sabaot and Cherangany councils of elders, on Elgon forest recovery, and on secondary schools of the plain.

What we do here
  • Elgon and forest

Working with the Sabaot on forest recovery and land tenure around Mount Elgon.

  • Cherangany council

Support for the Cherangany elders along the escarpment above Kwanza.

  • Schools of the plain

Bursaries and libraries in Kitale, Endebess, and Kiminini.
