The Kalenjin presence in Narok is concentrated on the Mau ridge and the western wards that border Bomet and Trans Mara. Kipsigis families farm wheat and tea along the highlands, and the Ogiek keep their ancestral country in the eastern Mau forest.

This is one of the counties where the Foundation's work sits closest to questions of land, forest, and neighbourliness. The Kalenjin communities here share a long history with the Maasai, and much of our work is done together with Maasai elders.

Programmes in Narok concentrate on the Ogiek of the Mau, on cross border peace, and on the schools of the ridge wards that serve both Kipsigis and Maasai children.

What we do here
  • Ogiek and the Mau

Support for the Ogiek Peoples Development Programme and forest land recovery.

  • Cross border peace

Joint elder councils with Maasai neighbours along the Trans Mara boundary.

  • Schools of the ridge

Support for primary and secondary schools that serve both communities.
