Sengwer

The forest that feeds you is the forest you keep.

Homeland
The Cherangany hills and the Embobut forest, the high forested spine of western Kenya.
Counties
Elgeyo-Marakwet · Trans Nzoia · West Pokot
Tongue
Sengwer, a forest tongue within the Kalenjin family.
Livelihood
Bee-keeping, forest gathering, small livestock, and mixed farming on the forest edge.

The Sengwer are a forest people of the Cherangany hills, custodians of one of the most important water towers in East Africa.

Their long struggle to be recognised as an indigenous forest community and to remain on their ancestral land is a matter of continuing national and international attention.

The Foundation stands with the Sengwer in the work of secure tenure, forest stewardship, and the honouring of their record.
