Sabaot

The mountain is a good father to those who climb it patiently.

Homeland
The slopes of Mount Elgon on the Kenya side of the great mountain.
Counties
Bungoma · Trans Nzoia
Tongue
Sabaot, the northern voice of the Kalenjin tongue.
Livelihood
Maize, dairy, bamboo, and highland horticulture.

The Sabaot are the community of Mount Elgon, the old mountain the elders call the cradle of the covenant, and their four sub communities of Sabiny, Sebei, Bok and Bongomek carry the whole face of the mountain.

The Sabaot share the mountain with kin on the Ugandan side, and the community stands at the northern edge of the Kalenjin nation, in daily conversation with the Bukusu and the Teso.

Their country is one of the most fertile in Kenya, and Sabaot farmers are among the finest maize and dairy growers in the region.
