Pokot

The herd that walks together survives the drought.

Homeland
The hills and plains of West Pokot and the northern reaches of Baringo.
Counties
West Pokot · Baringo · Elgeyo Marakwet
Tongue
Pokot, the most distinct of the Kalenjin tongues.
Livelihood
Cattle, goats and camels on the plains; maize, sorghum and honey in the hills.

The Pokot hold the northern country of the Kalenjin nation, from the highlands of Kapenguria and Chepareria down to the dry plains that fall towards Turkana and the Suam.

The community carries two great traditions in one: the hill Pokot of the maize gardens and the plains Pokot of the cattle, goats and camels, and both traditions have kept the community strong through hard seasons.

The Pokot are known for their disciplined age sets, their initiation songs, and a beadwork that is among the most distinctive in East Africa.
