The Marakwet are the people of the great furrows, an irrigation system carried down the cliffs of the Elgeyo escarpment for many generations and still in daily use today.
Marakwet country runs from the forests of the escarpment down to the sorghum and mango gardens of the Kerio Valley, and its three sub communities of Markweta, Almo and Endo hold the whole of that country.
The furrows of the Marakwet are one of the great engineering inheritances of the Kalenjin nation and a living lesson in how a community can farm a hard country well.
